I Capture the Castle is an enchanting coming-of-age story that represents English eccentricity at its very best.
The novel, which is set in the 1930s, takes the form of a diary written by aspiring author, 17-year-old Cassandra Mortmain, who practises her skills by chronicling life in the crumbling castle occupied by her eccentric family.
Cassandra is a wonderfully witty heroine whose story is both ludicrous and touching.
Her father, a once-famous author, is struggling with a severe case of writer's block while her artistic stepmother has taken to communing with nature in the nude. Her beautiful sister Rose longs to fall in love while the outrageously handsome gardener, Stephen, harbours secret feelings for Cassandra.
With almost no money, the family is barely scraping by when the wealthy American Cotton brothers move into the neighbourhood. At last romance seems a distinct possibility for Rose and Cassandra but the line between love and a desire to escape the castle becomes blurred.
