John Barritt, was first elected to the House of Assembly in the General Election of October 1993. He served as Government Whip until he was appointed Minister of Technology and Information in 1995.Mr Barritt was appointed Minister of Youth, Sports, Parks and Recreation in 1998, and was also given responsibility for Legislative Affairs. He served as the Shadow Minister of Legislative Affairs before becoming Opposition Leader of the House. He is currently Shadow Minister for Legislative Reform & Justice (with responsibility for Attorney General).
Mr Barritt was born in Bermuda on November 5, 1950, the son of former Speaker of the House of Assembly John Barritt and his wife, Hilary.
He attended Saltus Grammar School, then Albert College in Canada. He earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree at Trent University in Canada as a Bermuda Government scholar and went on to Carlton University, also in Canada, where he earned a Bachelor of Journalism degree with honours. In 1973, he joined the Royal Gazette in 1973 and three years later became editor of the Bermuda Sun. In 1980, he joined ZBM-TV and Radio as a broadcaster and talk show host.
In 1982, Mr Barritt decided to pursue a career in law, and enrolled in the University of Calgary. He earned an LlB in 1985 and in 1986 was called to the Bar in the province of Alberta, as well as to the Bermuda Bar. He joined the law firm of Appleby, Spurling and Kempe as an Associate, specialising in criminal, civil and commercial litigation. In 1990, he was admitted to partnership.
