Eddy De Mello

Eddy De Mello was born in Sao Miguel in the Azores, Portugal, in 1937, and came to Bermuda when he was 11 years old. 

 As the owner of The Music Box, Mr De Mello has recorded and produced many of Bermuda’s well-known artists.  He has brought great musical entertainers to Bermuda - Mahalia Jackson, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, George Benson, Amalia Rodrigues, George Ferreira, Byron Lee and many others.  Mr De Mello has also promoted boxing and wrestling. 

He was President of the Vasco da Gama Club for 17 years and he hosted a Portuguese Radio Program for over 30 years. In 1979, Mr De Mello was honoured as a Commendador da Ordem do Infante Dom Henrique (Knight Commander in the Order of Prince Henry the Navigator) for his contribution to the Portuguese community in Bermuda. 

 In 1988 he received a Queen’s Certificate and Badge of Honour in Her Majesty’s Birthday Honours in recognition of his work with the Portuguese community and in the entertainment field. He was awarded a second Queen’s Certificate in 2006 for his work on the Bermuda Independence Commission. In 2004, Mr. DeMello was also presented with the Bermuda Arts Council’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
