Grant Gibbons was appointed campaign chairman for the United Bermuda Party in 1993, and is credited with managing the party’s victory in the October, 1993, general election. In January 1994, he was appointed a Senator and Minister of Management and Technology. He also held the Telecommunications portfolio. In July, 1994, Dr Gibbons was elected to the House of Assembly following a by-election in the Paget East constituency. In August, 1995, he was appointed Minister of Finance Following the 1998 general election he was Shadow Minister of Finance and October 2001 was elected Leader of the Opposition United Bermuda Party – a position he held until January 2006.Dr Gibbons was born on July 3 1952 and educated at Saltus Grammar School. After graduating from Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, Dr Gibbons received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Brown University in 1974. He attended Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar from 1974 to 1976, where he was awarded a Master of Arts degree in philosophy, politics and economics. Dr Gibbons then studied organic chemistry at Harvard University, from which he received a PhD in 1982.Between 1982 and 1987, Dr Gibbons held a variety of management positions at the Squibb Corporation. He returned to Bermuda in 1987 and became managing director of Gibbons Company Ltd, and Peniston Brown Co Ltd. Dr Gibbons is currently the deputy chairman of Colonial Insurance. He is also the managing partner and a founder of Wired Atlantic Ltd, a venture capital investment firm, as well as a partner in Amerscan Wired Atlantic, a private equity firm. He is a director of Gibbons Management Services, Ltd, and a director of other financial services and technology companies overseas.
