Alan Burland is President of the BEAM group of companies and Chairman of the Bermuda Sloop Foundation.
He was educated at Saltus Grammar School, Bermuda and Wellington College in the UK. From 1970 to 72 he studied at McGill University, Montreal, Canada, where he majored in Science and achieved a Diploma of Collegial Science. In 1976 he obtained a BSc Engineering from the University of South Florida, USA. He became a Registered Professional Engineer in 1981.
Alan is a member of Bermuda Society of Professional Engineers, Engineering Institute of Canada, Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, American Society of Civil Engineers, Bermuda Employers Council, Chamber of Commerce, Labour Advisory Council, Vestry of St. Anne’s Church, National Training Board – Technical Advisory Committee, Bank of Bermuda Foundation and ACE Insurance Careers Path Initiative. He is also Chairman of the Bermuda Sloop Foundation.
He is currently President of the BEAM group of companies, including BCM McAlpine Ltd, a local affiliate of Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd. From 1986 to 1996 he was President and Managing Director of the BCM Group of companies, including Burland, Conyers & Marirea Ltd. (general contractors and construction managers, joinery and builders supply merchants). From 1985 to 1986 he was President of Engineering and Project Management Business at Bermuda Engineering Associats from 1983 to 85 was President of building consulting firm, A.E. Burland and Co. Between 1970 and 1983 he was Superintendent, Site Engineer, Project Manager and Contracts Manager at Burland, Conyers & Marirea Ltd.Alan represented represented Bermuda at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games on the sailing team and was named Bermuda Government Athlete of Year in 1985.
He is married with two children.
