Hamilton, Bermuda: Thursday, April 26, 2007 -
The Bermuda Progressive Labour Party has broken new ground in using an independent research firm to poll constituencies on candidate selection.
Dr. Ewart Brown, Premier of Bermuda and Leader of the country’s governing political Party, sees this development as a deepening of the democratic process within the organisation, and in the country.
Nearly twice as many persons as there are seats to be contested are formally seeking selection as candidates for the PLP in Bermuda’s next General Election.
For the first time, selection of the Progressive Labour Party’s candidates for a General Election will be informed by independently measured support within constituencies, in tandem with the recommendations of party branches.
Premier Brown emphasises that: “One of the benefits of independent polling in structuring his Party’s slate of candidates is that findings from the constituency polls will enable the PLP to field credible candidates, and to compete aggressively, in all 36 constituencies.”
Dr. Brown is confident that all 36 PLP candidates in the next General election will be serious contenders in their respective constituencies.
The Premier affirms that “No Opposition candidate will be allowed a free ride when next Bermuda goes to the poll.”
Though still in the fourth year of its second five year term, the Progressive Labour Party is about to begin the roll out of candidates selected to carry the PLP banner in the next general elections.
On this score, Premier Brown asserts, “The PLP has kept faith with the people; we have performed very creditably, bringing benefit to all; we have a great story to tell; and with the calibre of the candidates we will field, I am confident that the country will be of the majority view that the PLP remains by far the best option for moving Bermuda forward.”
