(Hamilton Parrish, Bermuda) March 5, 2007 -- The Bermuda Lacrosse Association Sunday held its fourth annual Tri-Nation Lacrosse tournament at the Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club in Bailey’s Bay. The tournament, which attracted the largest group of players to date, included three teams comprised of players representing their home countries - Bermuda, Canada, and the U.S.
The ‘round-robin’ tournament featured three games. Team Bermuda played Canada in the first round taking them to double overtime (6-5 Canada win) and played the U.S. in a close second round game in which the U.S. was forced to work hard for their last minute win (7-6 U.S. win). While team U.S. ultimately won the tournament, team Bermuda displayed vastly improved stick handling and ball skills.
This year’s tournament attracted players from all age groups and skill sets. Bermudian Mr. Sean Moore (defensive player) and his son Tucker Moore (attack player), who is a student at Saltus Senior School both played for team Bermuda as did John Buchanan (midfield player), a high school student at school in the U.S.
“This year was our strongest team at Tri-Nations,” stated Kirk Bridgewater, an attack player for team Bermuda. “Our defense, midfield and attack came together and took Canada to double overtime and then almost beat the U.S. We have some young and very promising players that will make our team even stronger for next year’s tournament.”
The organiser of the tournament, the Bermuda Lacrosse Association, was formed in 2002 and has attracted players who have played on university teams and people who have never seen a game before. This summer the team played in the 2006 World Games in London, Ontario to much fanfare and success.
“We hope to continue to attract new players and grow the club,” comments Michael Totman, team manager and defensive player. “We encourage people who are interested to contact us; it’s a fast and exciting game that is gaining in popularity around the world.”
In the winter, the Bermuda Lacrosse Association plays every Thursday evening at the Saltus Senior School gym and is looking to field a team to go to a tournament in Newport, Rhode Island this summer.
The team is also currently looking for interested students to put together an Under-19 team to participate in the Under-19 World Championships in British Columbia in July, 2008.For more information, people can visit the Bermuda Lacrosse Association’s website at www.bermudalacrosse.com or call Michael Totman at 278-2215.
