Hamilton, Bermuda: Thursday, May 03, 2007 -
The Ministry of Works Engineering has announced that it is the Government’s intention to introduce to Bermuda a system of Land Title Registration that takes account of international best practice, is appropriate to the island and has the confidence of all stakeholders.
Land has been described as the ultimate source of wealth and economic success. Given the finite nature of this resource here in Bermuda it is the responsibility of Government to ensure that it is managed, traded and utilized in an efficient and effective manner in order for it to be of benefit to both current and future generations.
“We are of the firm belief that the introduction of a system of Land Title Registration that is supportive of Government’s wider land management strategy will assist in the achievement of this objective,” Minister of Works and Engineering, Dennis Lister, JP, MP, said.
The new system of Land Title Registration takes advantage of the opportunities afforded by the deployment of modern technology.
“An efficient system of Land Title Registration will allow all those participating in the real estate market and those with other interests in land to obtain guaranteed information, make decisions, and carry through their intensions promptly, with confidence and under the law,” the Minister said.
The introduction of a system of Land Title Registration in Bermuda will have a significant effect on the way in which land and property transactions are processed.
That is because in the first instance Land Title Registration will change the way in which deeds and documents are dealt with following the completion of certain property transactions.
It will mean that rather than holding deeds and documents in private custody or lodging them at the office of the Registry General, there will be a statutory requirement to present them for registration at the Land Title Registration Office.
Government welcomes and encourages the views of all stakeholders on Land Title Registration and will be holding a series of consultation meetings starting on May 9 and continuing until the end of June.
You can view the Public Consultation Document on Land Title Registration by logging on to the Government portal at www.gov.bm , selecting the Works and Engineering section and then selecting the Land Title Registry Office where the Public Consultation Document can be viewed.Responses can be sent to landtitleregistryoffice@gov.bm. or alternatively through the mail to Public Consultation Land Title Registry Office, Ministry of Works and Engineering, PO Box HM5287, Hamilton HM CX.
