Hamilton, Bermuda: Friday, April 27, 2007 - The Minister of Social Rehabilitation, the Hon. Dale Butler, JP, MP today offered his congratulations to the 12 men and women who have participated in the Know Thy Self Community Lecture Series which was offered at the Bermuda College and sponsored by the Ministry of Social Rehabilitation. The Minister said, “We will be having a small reception for the participants at the Bermuda College on Saturday, 28th April, 2007.  At that time, I will have the opportunity to meet with Professor Melodye Micere Van Putten who presented the programme, and I will have the honour of presenting the participants with certificates and congratulations.” The Minister went on to explain that the mission of the Ministry of Social Rehabilitation is to develop human potential by building bridges to success.  The Know Thy Self lecture series helps to fulfil this mission by providing participants with an understanding of their history – where they have been, and where they are going. Professor Van Putten, M.A, is the creator and founder of Black History Workshops for Children and has written numerous workbooks and articles on history, culture, spirituality and empowerment. She has held stints as adjunct professor at several colleges and is also a talk radio commentator and nationally syndicated columnist. The Know Thyself lecture series has a proven positive impact on the lives of those who have taken part. Run over six weeks, each of the three hour classes was designed to raise personal awareness and increase one’s own ability to heal personal psyche and historically based wounds through the process of awareness, forgiveness and, ultimately, knowing. The lecture series appealed to a wide cross section of Bermuda residents, and those that participated were multi-ethnic, represented different religions and ranged in age from 20 to 60 years. Minister Butler indicated that the course may be repeated in future depending on demand.
