Category: Community Organizations, Charities & RelatedHamilton, Bermuda: Thursday, March 08, 2007 -
Ladies and Gentlemen Good Afternoon, my name is Martha Dismont and I am the Executive Director for The Family Centre. Don Mackenzie, our Board Chair has specifically asked that I send his regrets at not being able to be here today. However with me is the Board Committee Chair for Marketing and Public Relations, Sharon Leman (Starla Williams, Vice Chair of The Family Centre Board and Board Committee Chair for Fund Development) and the Development Director for The Family Centre, Liz Ward.
On behalf of The Family Centre, the Board of Directors, Management and Staff it gives me great pleasure to announce two events which will take place in June of 2007. The first is an annual Golf Tournament to be held here at the beautiful Belmont Hills Golf Course on the 20th of June and the 2nd event will be a Who Are You Leadership Seminar, aimed specifically at young individuals ages 16-30 years to be held at The Bermuda College on the 21st of June.
We are delighted to also announce that both events will be hosted by Stedman Graham, who although not personally here today is present via live telephone link and will speak with you shortly. At this time I would like to acknowledge our overall sponsor for both events, Tokio Millennium Re Ltd. and their President and CEO Mr. Tatsuhiko Hoshina.
As you know The Family Centre’s Mission is “To facilitate the strengthening of communities in Bermuda by providing community-based services to help families of at-risk children and youth build the skills and capacity they require to achieve and sustain stability”.
We also feel that it is important that the community have an opportunity to get involved with the work we do by supporting various events throughout the year. This coupled with the support we receive from our donors enables The Family Centre to serve families and achieve a sustainable future, which is of great importance to us and the Bermuda community. It now gives me great pleasure to introduce to you Mr. Stedman Graham. Stedman is no stranger to Bermuda and we are encouraged by his willingness to assist The Family Centre with the work that it does by giving his support to these two events.
Stedman Graham: It is a pleasure to be returning to Bermuda where I have spent much time enjoying the people and the island. Having committed my life to education and community development, I have been a supporter of the Family Centre for several years. I find their vision to serve youth and families complimentary to my own and have great respect for the leadership they demonstrate in the community.
In addition to playing in the tournament, I am particularly looking forward to facilitating a Who Are You - Leadership Development Program at Bermuda College for approximately 300 young people. The Who Are You program helps the participants understand who they are and develop a vision for their lives. I will share insights regarding how to cultivate their potential, expand their opportunities, and empower themselves to participate at all levels of leadership, personally and within school, community or organizations, while serving as advocates and mentors to others aspiring for greater achievement.
Martha Dismont: I am grateful to Tokio Millennium for serving as the primary sponsor of the tournament and of this important program. Thank you Stedman, we look forward to welcoming you back to Bermuda.I would now like to call upon Mr. Tatsuhiko Hoshina from Tokio Millennium Re Ltd to say a few words as our Overall Sponsor for both events. We are delighted that they have chosen to support The Family Centre in such as significant way. Being selected as their charity for 2007 is a great privilege and we trust they will be one of our supporters for many years to come.
Tatsuhiko Hoshina: Thank you, Martha.Tokio Millennium Re is proud to be associated with these events for the Family Centre. As our name suggests, we’ve been in Bermuda sincue 2000. We were the first major Japanese company to join Bermuda’s vibrant reinsurance market. And, thanks to the tremendous support of the Bermudian community, the company has been able to develop and grow. From the very beginning, Tokio Millennium Re focused its community efforts in the area of sports and fitness for Bermuda’s young people, which you have already heard described as Youth and Sports. A golf tournament and a leadership seminar for the Family Centre, whose work we admire, was a natural fit for our small contribution to the society in which we live. The future of Bermuda relies on the well being of her children and The Family Centre plays a vital role. Its work helping families of at-risk children, and giving those young people a better chance of establishing the fundamentals on which to build, deserves everyone’s support.
To bring about change, we must all work together. We are delighted to welcome Stedman Graham, and thank him for adding his stamp to these events. His ongoing commitment and support of The Family Centre mirrors our own determination to not only make these events a great success but to also ensure the sustainability of this tremendously important charity. Tokio Millennium Re is very pleased to be part of this team effort with you and Mr. Graham, in partnership with the hard work of Mr. Mackenzie, Martha Dismont and all their willing helpers.
Martha Dismont: We have come together for the good of the Bermudian community, in which we all play a role. Lastly, I would like to acknowledge our other supporting sponsors to date. Bacardi International Limited for partially sponsoring the Prize Giving Reception and the support of our 18 Hole Sponsors and our sponsor for Closest to the Pin; The ACE Group of Companies. We are also pleased to be able to announce that on the 17th hole there will be an opportunity to win a Daihatsu Charade Hatchback; this Hole in One Prize is being sponsored by HWP Group of Companies.
We are also very grateful to Alex Maderios and his team at To A Tee Bermuda for their Tournament Administration and Peter Marsh of Printlink for website and flyer support and to Bushara of Belmont Hills for hosting this Press Conference today and working with us on our 1st Tournament. We would also like to acknowledge the supporting sponsors of the Seminar.
