Hamilton, Bermuda: Thursday, January 04, 2007 -

(Hamilton, Bermuda) – Fairmont Hotels & Resorts Bermuda will sponsor the 30th annual Fairmont to Fairmont 7.2 mile road race on Sunday, January 7th, 2007.  The race, which is organised by the Mid Atlantic Athletic Club (MAAC) and sanctioned by The Bermuda Track and Field Association, is the longest-running sponsored road race event in Bermuda, which hosted its inaugural race in 1978, originally titled the Princess to Princess.

The Fairmont to Fairmont race is one of the largest and most popular racing events in Bermuda and attracted almost 200 participants last year.  This year, MAAC hopes to attract more than 300 race entrants and has confirmed that Bermuda’s celebrated triathlete Flora Duffy will be running.  Last year’s male and female winners, Jay Donawa and Victoria Fiddick, will also return to race again this year.

The race begins at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess at 9 a.m. and ends at the Fairmont Southampton’s Whaler Inn where there will be a festive anniversary celebration hosted by Fairmont Hotels & Resorts complete with complimentary breakfast buffet, including fruit and beverage stations, a disc jockey to provide music and several draw prizes to congratulate and entertain the runners and their families.  Massage therapists from the Bermuda Massage Therapist Association will also be on hand to provide free massages to runners as they finish the course.

As part of Fairmont Bermuda’s ongoing commitment to the community, Fairmont Bermuda is encouraging adults and juniors to participate in the race where every runner will be given a special anniversary memento and exciting prizes will be given to the top male and female finishers in seven categories.

The Juniors 3K Race, for participants aged 15 and under, will also start at 9 a.m. at the Heron Bay Market Place and end at the Fairmont Southampton’s Whaler Inn.  Prizes will be given to the top three male and female finishers in three categories: age group 8 to 10; 11 to 12 and 13 to 15.  The Juniors Race is part of the KPMG race series.

Rolf Runkel, the pastry chef for the Fairmont Southampton Hotel, who is running the race for the fourth time and is using the race as preparation for the Bermuda International Marathon, stated: “This annual race is very special to all of us at Fairmont Bermuda; we

enjoy being a long-standing member of the community and as this year is the race’s 30th anniversary, it makes it extra meaningful.  Cheers to the next 30 years!”

April Vesey, co-race director of the MAAC commented: “This event is a part of Bermuda’s history, many runners that ran the very first race in 1978 are still active in the running community today.  The continued success of this race is a testament to the support of the MAAC, Fairmont Bermuda and the runners who make it such a fun and exciting event every year.”

The deadline for entry is Friday, January 5th, although late registration will be permitted at the race number pick-up location at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess on Saturday, January 6th from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m.  No late entries will be accepted on race day.  Entry forms are available online at www.MAAC.bm and can be returned to ‘Sportseller’.  There will be a free ferry service for the runners from the Fairmont Southampton to Fairmont Hamilton Princess after the race.
