Category: Business, Companies

Hamilton, Bermuda: Monday, October 15, 2007 -

Hamilton, Bermuda – 15 October 2007: Butterfield Bank and British Airways today introduced a new premium credit card for Bermudians who like to travel.  The British Airways Visa Platinum card, available exclusively from Butterfield Bank, rewards cardholders with one BA Mile for each dollar spent on the card, two BA Miles for every dollar spent on British Airways purchases, and 3,000 bonus BA Miles upon enrolment. BA Miles can be redeemed on British Airways and partner airlines for travel to over 600 destinations worldwide.

Reward flights from Bermuda to North America start at 25,000 BA Miles and flights to Europe start at as few as 50,000 BA Miles. BA Miles can also be used for upgrades on British Airways flights. As an added benefit, cardholders who use their British Airways Visa Platinum card to purchase a qualifying, full fare ticket in Club WorldSM (business class) or World Traveller PlusSM (premium economy) from Bermuda to anywhere British Airways flies, will receive a companion ticket.

Announcing the launch of the card, Lloyd Wiggan, Senior Vice President of Retail Banking at Butterfield Bank, said, “For generations, British Airways has provided a vital link between Bermuda and the rest of the world, and for nearly 150 years, Butterfield Bank has been a pioneer in bringing world class products and services to the local market.  We are pleased to be able to join forces to bring another innovative product to Bermuda.”

The British Airways Visa Platinum card has a highly competitive annual fee of just $120 and will be available as either a Bermuda or US dollar-based card.  It provides a suite of travel and insurance services that reflect the privileges and prestige associated with a platinum-level Visa product. These include unsurpassed acceptance around the world, over the counter and ATM networks, offering cash access in local currency in more than 170 countries, travel assistance services (providing reliable destination information or pre-trip planning advice), travel accident insurance and auto rental insurance.  In addition, cardholders will be automatically enrolled in a Balance Protection programme at no additional cost.

Robin Hayes, Executive Vice President Americas for British Airways, said, “It has been a pleasure working with the team at Butterfield Bank to bring what we expect to be a very popular credit card to Bermuda.  The introduction of the British Airways Visa Platinum card coincides with our 70th anniversary of regularly scheduled air service to Bermuda, and I can’t think of a better way to say ‘thank you’ to our loyal customers than to provide them with a new way to earn valuable BA Miles.” Lorna Atiles, First Vice President Business Development Caribbean Region, Visa Latin America & Caribbean said, “We are pleased to be working with Butterfield Bank to introduce Bermuda’s first Visa Platinum card.  The British Airways Visa Platinum card enhances our presence in an important market for Visa.  It allows us to bring the convenience, security and the experience associated with the most recognised global financial services brand to a whole new set of clients.”

Customers may apply for the new British Airways Visa Platinum card at any Butterfield Bank branch.  Applications are also available online at http://www.butterfieldbank.bm/ba.
