Hamilton, Bermuda: Thursday, May 10, 2007 -
Hamilton, Bermuda) – Twelve Guides, age 10 – 14, have recently undertaken their Fire Safety Interest Badge as part of their ongoing Guide programme, and passed with flying colours.
The badge work was undertaken over a five-week period and included two visits to Hamilton Fire Station. While at the station, the guides learned about the importance of fire extinguishers, how fire stations handle emergency calls, smoke/fire detectors, fire trucks, training of the fire men and women, fire safety plans and how to deal with fires. The guides also prepared a fire safety poster and fire safety plan for their own home, all of which culminated in a test on fire safety.
Andrea Daniels, Assistant Girl Guide Leader for the 1st Hamilton Guides, says: “Fire safety is an important skill and the Guides agreed that this was a badge that they wanted to focus on as part of their Guiding work, particularly in light of the recent fire at the old Pembroke dump. They have learned a great deal in order to complete their badge and I commend them on their success.”Scott Quinn of the Hamilton Fire Station, says: “It is wonderful for these Guides to be learning about fire safety at such a young age. It is an important skill that they will carry with them throughout their lives and I was delighted to work with the 1st Hamilton Guides on this initiative.”
Five new Guides took their Guiding Promise and were enrolled into 1st Hamilton Guides last month. This unit re-opened in October 2006 and meets at Lady Asser Hut on Richmond Road on Tuesday evenings. Any girl between the age of 10 and 14 interested in joining the 1st Hamilton Guides should contact Alex Crampton on 295 8896.
