Voting gets underway this morning

After seven weeks of campaigning, polling for the 2007 general election gets underway at 8am today.

Premier Dr Ewart Brown rallied the PLP faithful last night, accusing the UBP of conducting a negative campaign in collusion with the media, while Opposition Leader Michael Dunkley urged voters not to forget the Bermuda Housing Corporation scandal as they go to the polls today.

The campaign has been hard-fought on both sides and opinion polls suggest the result could go either way.

Some pundits have predicted that the outcome will be decided by a handful of key seats, particularly Smith’s North where Opposition Leader Michael Dunkley takes on incumbent PLP candidate Patrice Minors.

Other seats to watch include St George's North where Jennifer Smith faces a challenge from Kenny Bascome, Warwick North East, which Gina Spencer is aiming to take from Dale Butler and Southampton East Central where there is a battle between David Dodwell and Zane DeSilva.

There are also two independent candidates, Roger Russell and self-styled ‘Son of the Soil’ Harold Darrell.

One of the novel factors of this year’s campaign has been the use of the Internet by both parties, widely regarded as an attempt to attract the youth vote.

The PLP set the tone when Premier Dr Ewart Brown announced the date of the election on a YouTube video while blogs and websites such as Facebook have provided the electorate with alternative sources of information.
