The Bermuda Race Relations Initiative (BRRI) will be expanded this year to include smaller meetings, black and white only forums and a series of radio lectures.

Announcing the 2008 agenda for the initiative, Premier Dr Ewart Brown said: “Allow me to say on behalf of this Government that we are deeply committed to the goal of creating a healthier environment with respect to the issue of race in Bermuda.

“However, we understand good intentions are not enough to magically resolve an issue that has festered for far too long.  We also understand that to tackle this issue effectively we run the risk of making some people uncomfortable in the process.

“But occasionally risk is the handmaiden of effective political leadership. We determined this government would embrace this risk in return for what we viewed as a policy initiative that was good for the country’s immediate and long term future.”

The Government has established an advisory group, which help to drive the initiative, as well as an organizing committee for the Big Conversation dialogues.

The BRRI will run from March to November and will include two black only and white only forums, as well as smaller conversations aimed at expanding the reach and effectiveness of the initiative.

Law firm Hallett Cox and Wilkinson will host a series of meetings and luncheons to enable black and white Bermudians within the business sector to have open discussions.

BRRI is also sponsoring Dr Eva Hodgson and the National Association of Reconciliation’s half hour radio lectures on 1340 AM on the subject of racism and privilege.

Other initiatives include a full length feature documentary, a half hour interview show on CITV called “The Big Conversation” and the establishment of the BRRI website.
