Terrence Smith, the only person convicted in the Bermuda Housing Corporation scandal, yesterday launched an appeal against his conviction.
Mr Smith was sentenced to eight years in jail after being found guilty of 42 counts of fraud amounting to $1.2 million.
His lawyer, Patrick O’Connor QC, argued in the Court of Appeal that Mr Smith was a “scapegoat for more powerful figures”.
Mr O’Connor applied for an adjournment to allow him to prepare legal documents.
He said the delay had been caused by Mr Smith’s previous lawyers and went on to criticize Charles Richardson for a conflict of interest as he had also been retained by Premier Dr Ewart Brown in his defamation case against the media.
Prosecutor Kulandra Ratneser called for the appeal to be rejected.
The appeal continues today.
