Public Health Week got underway yesterday with a celebration of World Health Day.

World Health Day is celebrated annually on April 7 to mark the founding of the World Health Organization.

This year’s event has the theme “Protecting health from climate change” and aims to raise public awareness of the health consequences of climate change.

There will be events throughout the week including the Argus Health Fair tomorrow.

Members of the public are invited to attend for health screenings and information on a range of issues including interactive, educational booths on climate change and how each of us can make a difference.

On April 10 the Ministry of Health honour the recipients of the 2008 Public Health Awards.

The public were invited to submit nominations for individuals and organisations who have contributed to protecting Bermuda’s public health from the effects of climate change.

April 11 is “Burn Fat Not Fuel Day”, aimed at encouraging members of the public to use sustainable forms of transport for the benefits it bring to the environment and to the body.

Buses and ferries will be free to the public on that day to encourage participation.

Capital G Ltd. has pledged to join the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Tourism and Transport in the initiative.
