Hundreds of mourners paid their final respects to Bishop Goodwin Smith yesterday, who died earlier this month after a long illness.
Bishop Smith, who was one of the island’s leading religious figures, was given a ‘recognition funeral’ in honour of the significant contribution he made to the community.
The funeral service took place yesterday at the Heritage Worship Centre.
Politicians from both sides of the house joined family and friends among the congregation and both Premier Dr Ewart Brown and Opposition Leader Michael Dunkley paid tribute to the late bishop.
As Administrative Bishop of the New Testament Church of God, Bishop Smith was one of the island's leading religious figures.
The 79 year old had been a pastor with the church for 29 years.
Never afraid to speak out, he opposed gambling and the inclusion of homosexuality in the Human Rights Act.
He served on a number of public boards, including the Human Rights Commission, and was awarded an MBE for his services to the community.
Bishop Smith leaves behind his wife, Ruby, daughter, Gayna, and four grandchildren.
