The Historical Heartbeats Lecture Series 2008 begins tonight with The Secret Graves of St. Peter’s.
The event will start at 6.30pm at St. Peter’s Church in St. George’s.
Ann Gibbs, Rick Spurling and Andrew Bermingham will talk about the life and times of people buried there such as Pilot Jemmy Darrell.
With the kind permission of Rev. David Raths, the public will also have the rare opportunity to see some of the graves in the vault underneath the church.
The 2008 lecture series features a wide variety of topics including the history of Bermuda’s sharks, the Boer prisoners of war, folktales and East End military fortifications.
Minister of Culture an Social Rehabilitation Dale Butler said: “Part of what makes this series unique is that these talks are not confined to classrooms or lecture halls. They are purposefully designed as interactive talks, giving participants the opportunity to experience the subject matter. We invite members of the public to join us on a boat and see where Boer prisoners of war are buried on Long Island; to walk around the recently refurbished Martello Tower while on a bus tour; to explore the forgotten figures of Bermuda’s past in the setting of the House of Assembly; and to talk about shark oil and shark sightings by the Bermuda Aquarium Museum & Zoo’s North Rock tank.”
