Energy Minister Terry Lister has unveiled the Government’s energy policy, promising a more hands-on approach.
“For far too long Government has maintained a hands-off approach to the issue of energy in Bermuda,” he said.
“However, the time has now come for energy to become an important element in a minister’s portfolio and this government will take full steps to address Bermuda’s ever-increasing carbon footprint.”
A new government department has been set up to oversee energy matters and a Green Paper will be introduced to provide a framework for reducing Bermuda’s reliance on fossil fuels.
Mr Lister said his department was working closely with key stakeholders, including BELCO and other government departments, but stressed that one of they key factors for success will changing the behaviours of members of the public.
The Department of Energy will be hosting a series of community meetings to consult on the major issues.
Other initiatives include assessing the energy efficiency of buildings and encouraging alternative energy sources in businesses and homes.
