The Government is challenging members of the public to Burn Fat Not Fuel by using public transport.

Announcing the initiative, Health Minister Nelson Bascome said: “As part of our observance of this year’s World Health Day, I am inviting the public to participate in our first, Burn Fat Not Fuel Day on Friday 11th April 2008.  This means, that I am inviting everyone to use sustainable forms of transport so that we can observe this year’s World Health Day theme, ‘Protecting health from climate change’.”

World Health Day is celebrated annually on April 7 to mark the founding of the World Health Organization.

The aim of this year’s theme is to highlight that climate change is real, human activities are a major cause, and human health is significantly threatened by adverse changes.

Minister Bascome said: “If more of us leave our cars and motorbikes at home on Friday 11th April, Bermuda is going to experience a drastic reduction of traffic congestion, fuel consumption; and, inevitably, a dramatic increase in physical activity.

“I am encouraging the public to take up the challenge to cycle, run or walk to work and that will be excellent for health and fitness. “

Buses and ferries be free to the public on that day to encourage participation and participants will receive a free reflective sash.

To register for the event go to www.health.gov.bm or call the Health Promotion Office on 278-6504.
