The Bermuda Environmental and Sustainability Taskforce (BEST) has welcomed the launch of the Sustainable Development Implementation Plan (SDIP) and is now calling on the Government to give it statutory force.
Spokesman Robin Lang said: "We realise that the creation of such a plan has been no easy task and that the long term success of this ambitious mission will be enhanced if the principles are put into law.
We feel extremely positive about the island's future as long as Bermudians continue to have an equal say in the cause of sustainability and as long as governments continue to listen."
BEST, which campaigned against plans to build a luxury hotel on the Southlands site, said it expected a “positive announcement very soon” on the issue. However, the group warned against giving tourism priority over other issues.
"Bermuda cannot afford to give tourism priority over education or housing, just as it can't afford for the environment to be left on the back burner while the economy gets a makeover. We must consider the big picture at all times and strive to find a logical balance that is sustainable for the whole island".
