(2 Tim 2:15 KJV) Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. The job as a parent cannot be easy. This makes sense. For to think that we are given an empty canvas (the mind of a child) upon which to map out a blueprint for the rest of their lives is pretty awesome.
No wonder so many go wrong. For how many brand new parents are even thinking of how they must carefully plan. I believe every child to be a brand new attempt at inventing a human being who is fully able to live up to their very own potential. Parents are the inventors who have a patent on the way they choose the care for their children. The outcome of each “invention” will only be known as time unfolds.
All babies are beautiful, as they lay in their bassinet or crib. They are totally reliant on the parent to take care of their every need. Yet, in order to be a successful parent, one must begin to think about the future needs of that child, even while it is in the womb and in the crib.
How will we speak to the child? When will we begin reading to the child? Who will we permit to influence the behaviour of our child? The list of questions are numerous. A part of this caring for the children while they are yet infants involves our own personal conduct. As parents, are we reading in front of the child? Does the child see us studying? Does the child hear us making good and proper use of the English language? As the child grows, do they understand how important their education is to us? Do we monitor the learning progress of our child from Pre-School onwards? Do we make sure that we are satisfied that they have reached the level of learning for one class before we see them elevated to the next class.
Parents, we are in charge of how our children perform in school. While our children may not be the most intelligent, this does not mean that they cannot and will not succeed in our public school system. Also, let’s be honest. There are those who fail in the private schools too. There are also those who do very well in the public schools. While we live in a very permissive society and it can be a struggle to see that our children are not negatively influenced, the child can still succeed. In our Bermuda, it must be quite obvious by now, that it is not the construction of a beautiful, high-tech, state-of-the-art building that will build up the education system and the education of our children. It will the building up of families in homes, which will allow the children to succeed in whatever type of building there is. Ultimately, the children will not care about a building; they will care about who cares for them. It must start at home which will allow it to easily translate into the schools.
As a parent of three daughters in the public system, I trust that the efforts of my husband and myself will cause the girls to exhibit skills which will enable them to understand the vitality of succeeding in Bermuda. Each school morning we pray and when I pray, I ask the Holy Spirit to help them to understand difficult concepts and to help them do well. I pray this way, because my mother prayed in this manner when my sister, my brother and I managed to successfully get through the public school system (at eh Berkeley Institute). Parents, as we get our priorities right, our children will right their priorities. Respice Finem.
