Bermuda 2008: a BNN special publication

Date Posted: Thursday, February 07, 2008
Author: Christen Pears with Walton Brown

2007 was an eventful year for Bermuda in which we saw the PLP win a third consecutive term in December's hard-fought election.

Governor Sir John Vereker left the island in October after five years in the post and in December his replacement, Sir Richard Gozney, was sworn in.

It was the year we said goodbye to legendary Bermudians Dame Lois Browne-Evans, Gloria McPhee and Roosevelt Brown (Pauulu Kamarakafegu).

The Hopkins Report recommended a radical overhaul of the public education system while plans to build a luxury hotel on the Southlands site prompted a fierce debate about sustainable development.

In this publication we look back at the events of 2007 with a selection of stories that appeared on Bermuda Network News. We also look forward to 2008 through the eyes of experts in a wide range of fields. From health to the arts and ageing to race, we examine some of the key issues for the year ahead.
